Shiitake Mushroom Grow Techniques
Shiitake Mushroom Logs vs. Sawdust Grow Blocks
The traditional and most wide spread way of growing shiitake mushrooms is with shiitake grow logs. Until now that has been the best way of farming your own shiitakes, but a revolutionary new idea may relegate your logs to the fireplace. Mississippi Natural Products has developed a shiitake grow kit that uses a special blend of sawdust and nutrients.

This new method unlocks the log's nutrients allowing easy access for the shiitake mushroom fungus. Think of it like this. Traditional shiitake grow logs are like untilled compacted soil. A sawdust grow block is like a tilled field with soil enriched with just the right balance of nutrients for the crop we're growing, in this case shiitake mushrooms. The shiitake fungus can easily and quickly permeate the block and gain access to all the nutrients it could ever want and in turn it rewards us with copious amounts of healthy shiitake mushrooms.
As with mushrooms logs, the sawdust blocks are pre-inoculated with the shiitake spores and will "fruit", or grow a crop of mushrooms, within 1 to 2 weeks. Mushroom logs also take 1 to 2 weeks for their initial flush, but that's where the similarities end. The majority of logs will produce between 2 to 4 flushes. A sawdust grow block produces up to 7 flushes and up to 2 pounds of shiitake mushrooms while a log may only produce 1 pound. That's double the mushrooms of a log!
If that weren't enough, some log companies will even try to sell you an additional recipe book. We offer a collection of shiitake mushroom recipes here on our website, and also include select recipes free of charge with our grow kits.
Apart from the monetary incentives, it's hard to put a price tag on the pleasure of watching your mushrooms grow day-in and day-out. They grow so fast you can almost see it happening!
